An Update from the Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League

Dear PVYBL Families:

We hope all of you are doing well and staying safe during this unusual time. Many of you have asked about our League’s plans for the upcoming season.

Rest assured that PVYBL is just as anxious as you are to get back on the court. Your Board has been working hard to stay on top of all national, state and local health directives and guidelines and has been in touch with the school district regarding facilities use.

We are currently unable to determine when we will be able to offer youth basketball programs. Current county health requirements would not allow us to offer a traditional program, although there is some possibility of a very scaled-down version. Also, at this time the school district is taking a cautious approach and is not issuing permits for any outside sports leagues of any kind to use any district facilities. Guidelines are constantly changing, so there is some possibility that both county and district requirements may be relaxed in the near future.

As soon as the Board believes we can offer a compliant program we will let you know. We remain optimistic!    In the meantime, remember that basketball is one of the few sports that can be practiced without a playing partner. Please encourage your child to practice shooting and dribbling in the backyard, driveway or wherever you can. We can’t wait to see all those smiling young faces back on the court!   Until then, please stay safe and keep healthy.

Sincerely,

Scott Allen, Kelly Baranick, Zach Freeman, Jeanne Hanaoka, Craig Handjian, Jason Huang, Roger Lin, Jim Nguyen, Tom Schloemer, Stefani Turner

Vote Yes on Measure PV

The greatest challenge our league faces is finding sufficient gym time so our kids can learn basketball, sportsmanship, and life lessons in a safe and positive environment. The PVP School District has been a great partner by allowing us to use their gyms. But there just isn’t enough gym time to go around, which is why we sometimes have 30 or more kids playing in a gym at the same time. And why we sometimes have to reschedule games due to conflicts with High School activities.

Measure PV includes funding to build new gymnasiums at PV schools, greatly increasing our access to gym space and allowing us to serve more kids in a better environment.

As a result, Measure PV would direct benefit PVYBL and all enrolled kids, which is why the Board encourages you to consider voting “Yes”

And while the prospect of new gyms is a directly benefit to the League, there are other tangible benefits to all PV homeowners. Voting Yes on Measure PV will help maintain our excellent schools, which leads to high property values, protects our investments, and makes this community a great place to live.

Our schools average 60 years old, and most have not been renovated in almost twenty years. As you may know, the Palos Verdes Peninsula School District receives a below-average portion of state funding. Budgets are strained. The quality of our facilities has already fallen below our neighboring districts, all of which invest more in their schools. Passing this measure will guarantee that one hundred percent of the funds go directly back to our schools, with complete local control of how the money is spent. A citizens’ oversight committee will be appointed from members of this community to review and audit all spending.

Funds will go towards retrofitting school buildings to meet new statewide seismic codes and improving earthquake safety; increasing access to safe, good quality drinking water; updating fire safety and security systems; complying with the Americans With Disabilities Act; repairing deteriorating school roofs; and replacing outdated plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.

We recognize this is an unusual message to receive from your recreational sports league, but we believe Measure PV will provide tangible benefits to the League and its participants.

Thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you all in the gym!

What are parents saying about PVYBL? (Part 2)

"Great experience overall from opening day to photos to your help with my daughter after she broke her arm and had to sit the season - and our coach was absolutely phenomenal. Also love the refs - love how they take the time to explain what the player may have done wrong. My daughter wants to play after sitting the season out and watching her brother - and my son felt a sense of accomplishment - his coach really played his strengths and built him up (only his 2nd season playing). Thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to do this for the sake of the kids - excellent work!"

"Great job on your inaugural season, we had a blast!! I felt the season went smoothly with little to no changes in schedule which was a huge plus! Thank you for everything!"

"Awesome experience!! Thank you for a great season! We are sad it’s over."

"Thanks for doing an incredible job organizing this league! Wow!"

"Thank you so much for everything - we can't believe how organized this league was, how incredibly run, and what a great experience we had. You've all worked so hard to roll out this league and we are very impressed by how organized it was - and it's only the first season! "

"Son has definitely improved his game. 3 v 3 may have helped."

"Great job! My kids had a blast this season. My family really, really appreciates the hard work to organize this league. Again, great job!"

What are parents saying about PVYBL? (part 1)

"I have worked with many youth organizations and I can tell you this was the most well run organization I have come across in over 20+ years in the industry. Referees were AWESOME! I always received immediate responses back from the league when I was inquiring about something. I truly can't say enough great things. Hands down PVYBL wins for having the most successful inaugural season. Congrats and thank you!"

"Our kids grew up playing [in another local league]. The uniforms were cheap, times and location were inconvenient, and the quality of b-ball instruction (and coaches) left much to be desired for. Our team’s 15yr old coach last yr “dropped and rolled” across the court in protest of a refs call. Congrats that PVYBL is the polar opposite in every way, and a HUGE success!!! Everything was so organized and ran so smoothly you’d think the league has been around for years! Keep up the great work and thank you for gifting the PV community with PVYBL!"

"My son had never played basketball prior to this season. He had an amazing time and enjoyed the wins and stayed positive through the losses. I was thoroughly impressed by the coaching, referees and organization of the league. Thank you for giving my son a great first-time experience into basketball."

"The league organization was amazing! From the timeliness of when we received the uniforms, starting each practice/game on time, receiving trophies on last day of game. Amazing!"

"Wonderful season! It is a joy to support such honest, organized, passionate people trying to give such a great experience for the kids. Greatest experience ever. My kids are loving basketball!"

"WE LOVED THE LEAGUE, OUR SON IS SO MUCH IMPROVED, COACH WAS AWESOME, OUR SON ASKED US FOR SUMMER LEAGUE SO A COMPLETE SUCCESS IN THE IMPORTANT ASPECTS : )"

"Look forward to next year, great job!"

"Great job running the league!! Well organized, great communication by the league and the coach."

PVYBL Celebrates Amazing Season with Championship Day and Awards Ceremony

What an exciting finish to this amazing season! Griffins and Basilisks battled hard the entire game. The Team Flash vs PV Avengers match was decided by only 1 point and went down to the final possession of the game.

Just like Opening Day, the Field House Gym was packed once again by families attending the Awards Ceremony and Closing Day celebrations. All the parents and kids had big smiles on their faces. Even the coaches got into the action before the entertaining Exhibition Games.

It's hard to believe it was less than 12 weeks ago when the awesome Opening Day Celebration tipped-off this incredible, inaugural PVYBL season.

Thank you, parents and volunteers! None of it would be possible without your trust and support throughout this inaugural season. Together, against all odds, we brought this much-needed organization into existence and changed youth basketball in Palos Verdes forever. It was truly all about the kids!

Please share your experience with friends and families so more kids can enjoy PVYBL in the future.

2019 Summer League Registration is Now Open

What’s the cure for the summertime blues? Playing hoops with your friends in PVYBL, of course!

Our summer program offers great hoops action in a low-key setting, with no draft, no standings, and no playoffs. Just great summertime hoops. Teams can be formed with friends and schoolmates at your request.

WHEN:
10 consecutive Sundays, starting on 6/16/2019 and ending 8/18/2019, with NO weekday games. Need to miss a week or two due to summer travel plans? No problem! Our low-key format de-emphasizes scores and standings, so missing a game here and there isn’t an issue.

WHERE:
In a PVPUSD school gym, primarily Peninsula High School.

WHO:
Boys and Girls from Kindergarten through 8th Grade (based on grade level next Fall) are welcome to join. Divisions will be organized by grade level.

WHAT:
Have fun while developing basketball skills with friends, played in the gym with CIF-certified referees.

HOW MUCH:
$175 for the 10-week program that includes our signature high-quality, reversible, personalized uniforms. Already have a uniform from our Winter League that still fits? You can reuse it and save $50, bringing the cost to only $125 for the summer! (Use coupon code "REUSE" during check-out.)

THE FORMAT:
To ensure that all players have plenty of chances to handle the ball, all age groups will use the 3-on-3, half-court format that has been so successful for our younger players. No matter your child’s ability level, they’ll have loads of chances to dribble, pass and shoot. And they’ll have a blast and develop strong basketball fundamentals along the way.
